Statement

Stefan Heuser’s brooches Duotone, as the title suggests, have two faces, two sides to them. They reveal a rear side that is more elaborate than the front.
The young artist from Munich uses materials such as steel, silver or gold in this series of pieces, adding colour in the form of enamel or coloured stones such as rubies or sapphires.
The front side of the brooch presents itself as a very simple and minimalist square or rectangular shape, flat, usually utilizing dark monochrome tones. It could almost be definable as plain. The reverse side of his pieces, on the other hand, are the exact opposite. Very ornate, elaborate and at times colourful. The roles of the front and back of the brooch have been completely inverted.
The question is, why make the reverse side elaborate if it does not show when it is being worn?
There has always been a fascination in a piece of jewellery presenting a secret, a hidden part that only the wearer is aware of.
In antiquity, lockets were used to conceal images of loved ones. In the same way, the “precious” side of the brooch remains known only to the owner of the piece and creates an attachment that goes beyond the simple wearing of jewellery.
